âYou...what...you live in New York, and yeah, the Robinsons knew that and gave them to you, but this whole thing was my idea, and you get to raise them?â Miaâs stricken expression made Jordon glad that words were tumbling out of her.
Giving him some clue how to help.
âIâm sorry,â she said then. âThatâs not fair to put that on you. You didnât ask for any of this. Itâs just...youâre serious? Youâre going to keep them?â She was right back in control. Proving once again that she didnât need his help.
His disappointment was far more intense than the situation demanded.
âI was thinking that Iâd have them in New York during the school year, and then theyâd come here to spend summers at the ranch,â he said, testing the theory out loud.
Against his greatest critic.
Because he couldnât find a way to put it down on his own.
And because he fully trusted Mia to put the girls first.
Mouth open, she was staring at him. âYouâd let me have them for the summers? They could grow up being a part of Shelter Valley?â
The way she said it, like her hometown was some kind of black hole to him, hit hard. Harder than it should have?
Had he made her feel ashamed of the small town sheâd loved more than him?
And...what was that? The mental question hit him on the tail of his last thought.
Did he really believe it? Had he ten years ago?
Mia had loved Shelter Valley more than sheâd loved him.
Had he consciously had the thought when heâd left her?
Or was it just now surfacing?
Heâd spent so many years blocking it all out, he couldnât be sure.
âThereâs no way Iâd keep them and not share them with you, Mia. You have to know that. Somewhere, deep down...â
She stared at him and blinked when her eyes grew moist. Then, she shook her head. âNo, Jordon. Donât do that to me. We can talk about the girls, about a future that could include both of us in their lives...but donât...â
When her voice broke off, it took all he had not to pull her into his arms. To promise her that everything would be okay and heâd never hurt her again.
But he couldnât do it.
Because he probably would hurt her. Just as sheâd hurt him.
They were too different. Maybe not their personalities, or their life views...but their needs. Shelter Valley, or small-town living at least, brought her peace. And had him climbing the walls. While big cities, the freneticism, kept her on edge. And that was where he thrived.
He loved the East Coast.
She was the Wild West through and through.
âYouâd really let me have them all summer?â
Her doubt bothered him. Way more than it should have. âTheyâre yours, too, Mia.â
She nodded then. Staring at him, still. Sipped from her wineglass without taking her eyes from him.
As though if she blinked, heâd change into some kind of monster.
And the trouble was, he couldnât blame her.
He understood.
She was the one whoâd been honest from the very beginning. Before theyâd even become a âthem.
